Our sourdough adventure-summer 2024
I have been trying to bake my own bread recently, but never tried making sourdough bread. Thanks, to my daughter in law getting me into this long, fun and super delicious bread making.
During our last visit, she asked us if we like sourdough bread and then, she tried to engage me into feeding the starving sourdough cells, which I actually didn’t know the procedure. Same night she served us delicious garlic sourdough bread. when we are leaving, she packed a small amount of starter for us to make our own bread. Of course, by the time we came home, little jar was completely filled with hungry yeast cells and actually leaked into Ziplock bag where the jar was put in. Even dough I tried to feed them right of way it didn’t work. Eventually we decided to purchase the original starter, so our sourdough adventure started the day we received our little container contained our starter. This very fun, but time consuming, easy but requires precise timing business gives us homemade, very delicious and different variety types of breads. It looks like this page has more carbohydrates than equal value nutrition but we must remember moderation always. We only eat a slice of bread daily no matter how delicious steaming bread slices fresh out of the oven. Indeed, fresh sourdough bread became a really good appetizer dunking in olive oil or spreading butter on, in our recent family and friend gatherings. We enjoy a lot and I hope you do too. Distant Lands - spring 2024
We are traveling around Australia these days. Maybe some people visit this wonderful land many times, but for us it is once in a life time experience which I find myself very lucky to have this opportunity. As I travel more places, I witness a big picture better and I see, that world’s people are very different from one another.
Even in the same country from region to region there are basic differences. Traditions, clothing, personal habits, social behaviors and food vary according to ecological and in fact geographical conditions.
But one thing is same in general and that is social impact of food! Food brings friends and family together, food is a motivation for parties, for business meetings and many other social activities.
Most importantly food is the main reason for family members to sit around the table at least once a day, to enjoy, talk, laugh while eating.
Therefore, food means much more than nourishing us. Food is love, food is sharing happiness or sadness, food is recovery, food is life itself!
From the basic ingredients, to the way we prepare the food, the way we set the dinner table or floor table, and ritualistic prayers we say before we start eating, all of them depend on the region we live in and the way we were raised.
These characteristics reflect only part of our cultural identity, those we pass down to younger generations along with recipes.
We don’t think about frying leeks, or boiling melon. Or we don’t even know or many produces don't sound appealing those grow in distant lands, for instance ugly fruit smells so bad we can’t even get close. although, it is a very healthy fruit.
But if we can search a little further, we can see other cultures cuisines are also rich and delicious. Even time to time it may be really healthy to try different recipes I believe!
But no matter what you eat, try not to delay or skip "a family dinner" at least once a day!
That is the real nourishment for the body and the soul!
