Floating Market /Pattaya/Thailand
Seeing beautiful Orchids in their home environment in Bangkok was exciting. They are everywhere from airport to hotel, gardens, restaurants homes.
Our destination is Pattaya; a small town two hours ride away Bangkok international airport. Flat landscape along the road is covered with rich vegetation because of humid subtropical climate. You can easily realize diverse group of flora from the see level all the way up to the mountain.
Pattaya greets you with its narrow streets and very lively and flamboyant people who share the walkways with bikers! Hundreds of souvenir stores sell authentic goods and you may bargain some, but not much.
Our first experience for dinner was the Restaurant named “Rimpalabin” If you stop by Pattaya, I strongly recommend Rimpalabin, which is located on the out skirts of Pattaya, built on a hill by the ocean. The scenery, sunset and the food were spectacular.
Partying starts in Pattaya way after sunset, nevertheless, the streets get intensely crowded once the sun disappears in the horizon. The eccentric night lights of the taverns, bars, restaurants and stores glow in the dark and create a mesmerizing atmosphere. If you like nightlife, Pattaya is the place.
Indeed I want to talk about Floating market in Pattaya when we talk about the food.
I have seen the floating markets in movies. But visiting a floating market in real life was a totally different experience. Despite the fact that Pattaya Floating Market is not natural they did a good job in making it look real. It is a relatively new charming village market, which built on an artificial lake. Floating market is just south of Pattaya on Sukhumwit Road. The market is also called “Four Regions Floating Market” which sells goods from the north, northeast, south and central part of Thailand. It is a duplicate one that you can find in Damnoen Saduak near Bangkok. However, the locals we talked were saying that Pattaya Floating market is much better and larger than the real one.
There is Thai-style little buildings connected to each other with small bridges. Thus, it is very easy to stroll around the many shops, which sell handcrafts, souvenirs, artwork, besides a wide collection of typical Thai food Restaurants, because food is the main attraction here. There is also face, head and foot massage sites where they sell cosmetic ointments made with authentic herbs.
The boat rides are also available for 200 baht to see the vegetation, simple Thai villages, floating traders, and small floating kitchens along the canal. It is remarkable how locals cruise on the lake, cook, and serve small meals in the tiny boats using primitive grills and simple kitchen gadgets around the Floating Market under the bright sun in humid weather. Their menus include Pad-Thai, noodle soups, rice vermicelli, and coconut pancake as well as coconut rice dessert.
What struck me the most was the bug stand. Grasshoppers, Scorpios and bug’s larva displayed on the stand waiting to be sold. Watching a tiny lady waiting for a bunch of bugs to be fried and seasoned and later seeing her enjoying the delicacy was the highlight of our day. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our fried chicken, noodle soup and coconut rice.
I see that people’s eating habits and food preference vary according to their cultural upbringings, social and personal backgrounds, financial powers, climates and many other aspects.
After all healthy eating means consuming right amount of foods from all basic food groups in order to expect a healthy life. These food groups contain, Whole grains, Fruit and vegetables, Protein sources (meat, dairy, legumes, etc.), nuts.
Have a healthy eating.
