poppy Seed Pastry
Ingredients: 1 C warm milk 2tbsp crystalized sugar 1/2 C evaporated milk 1 egg 2 1/4 tsp dry yeast 4 3/4 C (could be 5 C depends on type and brand of the flour) unbleached flour 1/2 C soft butter 8 oz. poppy seed paste 1/3 C tahini 1/2 C crunched walnut 1 egg yolk and 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil -To brush the top. Making: Bring milk, evaporated milk, egg and sugar together in a mixing bowl and mix well until mixture becomes creamy. Add yeast and mix it to dissolve with rather wooden spoon. Add sifted flour, mix it with mixer’s dough attachment. Form a soft dough. Add softened butter continue to mix until butter well mixed into the dough. Cover the dough with saran wrap place it in a dark and warm place let it rise for an hour. In the meantime, mix 8-ounce poppy seed paste and 1/3 C tahini in a bowl together to well smooth mixture. Transfer the dough on the wooden service knead it with the help of flour form a dough again Roll the dough out 10 X 13 inches rectangle. Spread the poppy seed mixture on to dough evenly. Roll the dough firmly. Slice it in 1.5 inches slices. Place a baking sheet at the bottom of the bread pan. Place the slices into the pan. Put the saran wrap on top and let it rise for 20-30 minutes.
